A full remodel that moves plumbing and rewires is more commonly six to ten, and the delays are rarely the contractor's crew — they are cabinet lead times, an inspection window that lands badly, and the change order that follows a discovery. Swapping cabinets and counters in place generally does not need a permit. Moving a sink, adding circuits, or altering structure does, and the inspection schedule then sets the pace of the middle of the job. Each tier is roughly double the one before, and the step from mid-range to full is the one homeowners consistently underestimate. Hold ten to twenty per cent back for what appears behind the cabinets, and treat that as likely rather than cautious in any house built before 1980.
Often, if the boxes are sound — and in a well-built home from the seventies or eighties they frequently are. Refacing gets most of the visual change for a fraction of the cost. Have a contractor assess the carcasses before you assume they are going in a skip.
