Cabinetry is usually both the largest line item and the longest lead time, and it sets the critical path for everything after demolition. Stock cabinets can arrive in days. Semi-custom commonly runs several weeks, and full custom can run months. The mistake that costs the most time is ordering cabinets after demolition starts rather than before — the crew then sits idle waiting, and you live without a kitchen for the difference. Order early, accept storage, and the project shortens dramatically.
This surprises almost everyone and it is worth planning for. Stone and quartz counters are templated once the cabinet boxes are installed and level, because a millimetre of variance matters at that scale. That means a gap — commonly one to three weeks — between cabinets going in and counters arriving, during which you have base cabinets and no work surface. It is normal, it is not your contractor stalling, and knowing about it in advance turns a frustrating fortnight into an expected one.

Swapping cabinets and counters in place generally does not need a permit. Moving a sink, adding circuits, or altering structure does, and the inspection schedule then sets the pace of the middle of the job. Switching from gas to induction is one of the most common requests now and one of the most commonly under-budgeted.
